What’s It Like To Work In Oncology Care?

Have you ever wondered this? Considering a career choice that involves cancer? You’ve come to the right place! This Oncology Professions blog will introduce you to many of the professionals involved in caring for people with cancer. These professionals will share their experiences, what brought them to oncology and what they love about their job. I speak for just about all oncology professionals when I describe the reactions I get when I tell someone I work in cancer care. Oh my gosh, that must be SO sad. How can you do that? Isn’t it depressing? – I could go on and on, but you get the picture. The public thinks our field is a depressing cry fest every day. They couldn’t be more wrong.

For starters, there are many, many happy stories of good outcomes. I mean there are 13 million cancer survivors and counting in the U.S. alone! Of course there are plenty of people whose cancer journey is not so fortunate, but these are often the people who need our support and care the most. Oncology professionals have an impact on people’s lives each and every day they go to work. Whether it is delivering good news, holding a hand and discussing bad news, working to make a side effect more manageable or helping a family member cope with their role as caregiver, we work to improve the lives of those we care for every day. I challenge you to find many professions that provide the reward that cancer care provides. And with so many areas to choose from, how can you not explore all that an oncology profession has to offer?

Over the coming weeks, this blog will explore some of the professionals who provide care for people with cancer. I hope it helps you find a career to explore!
