There’s an App for That! (part 1 in a series)

Welcome to my newest blog series, “There’s an App for That!”  In this series, I’ll feature apps and features available on your mobile phone/tablet that can help you manage your cancer care.

Full disclosure: this entry of “There’s an App for That” focuses specifically on a tool available only on ipPhones and with the iOS (operating system). I apologize in advance to android users. Samsung does have an “S” health app available that appears to monitor activity and sleep. However, I want to focus today on the HEALTH app available on the iPhone. The app comes as part of your iOS installation and updates.

The app monitors activity (steps and flights of stairs) and offers a spot where you can organize other third party apps to help you with things like mindfulness, nutrition and sleep.

But here is what I think is the MOST IMPORTANT part of the health app; the Medical ID option. It is located on the bottom right side of the screen.

This function of the app allows you to input important information about your medical history, allergies, medications and emergency contacts.

It also permits you to “opt in” for this information to be available WITHOUT your passcode (i.e. ‘show when locked’). This is key. If you are in an accident or have a medical emergency, first responders will be able to access this important information without needing your password to access your phone. Don’t worry, the rest of your phone is still locked down.

If you have an iPhone, take the time to complete your Medical ID via this app. It can save time, promote safety and well-being and help insure your family can be contacted much more quickly in case of an emergency.

“There’s An App For That” is an ongoing series highlighting mobile apps available on IOS and Android platforms that encourage cancer patients and caregivers to use a tool readily available at their fingertips-to help manage their care needs.
